Budding soccer star dreams to play pro leagues

At just 11-years-old, Joshua Matthews has netted over 30 goals.

AT just four-years-old, soccer player and prodigy, Joshua Matthews was already exposed to the game.

At 11, he is a seasoned player who boasts over 30 goals to his name, proving that dynamite does indeed come in small packages.

“My dad played football when he was younger and he took me to practice when I was four turning five-years-old.”

“I’ve enjoyed the game since then. In fact, I love all ball sports but soccer is my number one. I do well as a goalkeeper and forward,” said the Seaview Primary School learner.

His debut team was the Fynnlands FC, where he gained vast experience on the field and was even awarded the most improved player in one season.

He later joined the Yellowwood Park FC, scoring an impressive 23 goals in one season and accumulated the highest score for his team.

Although the lockdown has dampened much of training time, Joshua has netted 11 goals so far this season. However, the young athlete is still very much on his toes with his training as he still does so at home.

“We have a great team where we work together and are all friends. Football is where you learn life skills and it keeps the youth from getting involved in the wrong things.”

“I love the game and would love to play at a professional level in South Africa and overseas. I would love to play for Barcelona or Manchester United. My role model is Lionel Messi,” said the Grade 6 learner. Soccer means a great deal to the Matthews family as everyone is involved in the game.

Joshua’s parents, Jacky, is an administrator for his club, and Grant, his dad, is a coach while his six-year-old sister, Savannah, plays too.

If he is not perfecting his game, he plays electronic games, reads, or finding out more about space and other planets. He is also enjoys doing church activities.

“My parents give me all the support I need to play at my best. They are there at training and matches and give me advice. I’m also involved in athletics and swimming.”

“I have played cricket, hockey and would like to try rugby. I love animals especially dogs, cats, horses, and reptiles like snakes,” he added.

Rising soccer star, Joshua Matthews, 11, has a soft spot for animals but loves reptiles mostly.
