Montclair’s super-sleuth sergeants praised for cracking false case
A 33-year-old man falsely opened a case of carjacking and kidnapping.
INVESTIGATORS from Montclair SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Unit arrested a man for defeating the ends of justice on Monday, June 14.
For their sterling work on the case, super-sleuth sergeants Sifiso Shezi and Bhekumuzi Dlamini were each awarded and congratulated by station commander, Colonel Trevor Small on Thursday, September 9.
According to police, the 33-year-old accused had initially opened a case of false case of carjacking and kidnapping.
He alleged that the incident occurred in the Montclair policing precinct. The sergeants thoroughly investigated the case when they established that the man’s version of events appeared to be very far-fetched.
Upon receiving the call from the station of a case of carjacking, the duo proceeded to the charge office where they interviewed the man.
He informed them that he was hijacked at the N2 off-ramp southbound by five armed men. He further alleged that they took his cellphones before they drove off with him in the vehicle.
The man claimed the suspects fled toward Umkomaas where they dropped him off. After opening the case, the man signed an undertaking that he would be criminally prosecuted should he a false statement under oath.
“We informed him that if the case he was opening was false, we would charge him for defeating the ends of justice. The complainant signed the undertaking that all information endorsed was correct.”
“He couldn’t be located as the investigations needed to continue. We finally found and placed him under arrest. He confessed that he had it stripped and sold parts of the car to different people. The car belongs to his girlfriend. He said he did that because they broke up,” Shezi said.
Perpetrators who open false cases are warned that they will be arrested and placed before the criminal justice system for prosecution.
The body of the car was recovered in a scrapyard in Chatsworth. The man is currently out on bail and will appear in court on Wednesday, October 6.
“The public is cautioned on the opening of false cases as it will result in arrests,” said Montclair spokesperson, Captain Derek Vijiam.
