KZN Legislature donates school essentials

FIFTY Durban South Primary School learners were the beneficiaries of school essential packs courtesy of the provincial government.

Members of the KZN Legislature including ward 32 councillor, Protas Mngonyama, visited the school on Tuesday, February 1, to hand over the packs which included a school jersey, branded school and pencil bag.

Speaking at the special assembly, the deputy speaker of the provincial legislature, Themba Mthembu, said the annual event forms part of their upliftment mandate.

“We run this programme annually in communities especially for the underprivileged. We are an activist parliament and this is one of the things we do for the people. We feel it is important to uplift our people because by doing so, we build a transformative and progressive country.

“We encourage learners to stay committed to schooling and education, even though there were challenges they faced with attending school on alternate days,” he said.

Mthembu added that the aim of the initiative was ensuring that learning is a success. He said the school was handpicked by the late former deputy speaker, Mluleki Ndobe, who worked closely with the ANC branch leadership in ward 32.

Grade 7 learner, Aphiwe Shezi, welcomed the team from the provincial government on behalf of the learners and expressed her gratitude.

“I realise that a friend in need is a friend indeed and I hope that this friendship continues. What you did will bring financial relief to families suffering because of the economic decline in our country and school.

“God has already blessed you. You have contributed towards confidence in the learners who will now look like everyone else and this will surely improve even their school performance,” she said.

The school’s governing body (SGB) chairperson, Sandile Ngwane, was also appreciative of the gesture.
