THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) pleads for sponsors for Umlilo the jackal.
Umlilo means fire and she was named after the fire that took place at her grassland on October 2, 2021, and she was the only survivor.

Emma Jackson, the spokesperson for Crow, said that Umlilo has been under their care since October 2, and she was only 5 weeks.
She is now 6 months and is ready to be released. Crow has not decided where to release Umlilo as yet however is looking to release her when she is a year old.
“We have been completely hands-off with her for a few months and she is starting to show her true jackal spirit. We have moved her to the final phase of her rehabilitation process, which is jackal pan,” said Emma.
She asked for assistance to ensure that Umlilo does not find herself in trouble.
“This enclosure is on the edge of the center where there is no foot traffic. This means there will be no human stimulus, ensuring she is ready to be released. We are looking at getting a tracking collar for her release to make sure she is safe and not getting herself into trouble. If there is anyone who would like to sponsor a collar or put money towards a collar, we would be so grateful,” said Emma.
She appeals to researchers, who are studying jackal behaviour, for tracking collars.
“Research that can be collected from these devices is incredible. If there are any researchers out there doing studies on jackals and have spare collars please consider Umlilo,” Emma asked.
The collars cost between R6 000 and R14 000. Crow will accept any donations regardless of the amount. Contact Crow on 031 462 1127.
