Criminals target community clinic in Merebank
Thieves gained entry onto the property by cutting a hole in the fence.
THE community is urged to be the eyes and ears of the police and report criminals lurking around the Merebank Clinic after perpetrators cut the fencing and gained entry into the clinic recently.
According to community leaders, the area is rife with vagrants and opportunistic criminals who prey on the facility, despite security measures that are put in place to deter them.
Yusuf Vawda, a member of the clinic committee, said he was disgusted with the behaviour of the perpetrators and believed they had cut the fence to gain access into the area of the clinic that housed the air conditioners and other items of value.
“The copper pipes were stolen after the fence was cut. We have made a temporary solution to closing the hole in the fence, but we need assistance to safeguard the clinic.
“I urge residents living around the clinic, as well as motorists and passersby, to report any suspicious activity. Together, we can ensure that the facilities in our community remain untouched by criminals.
“A woman was also robbed while walking towards the clinic, and we are encouraging elderly residents to walk in groups and appealing for more volunteers to patrol during peak times. As crime continues to escalate in all parts of our country, we urge people to be proactive, be the eyes and ears of the community and report incidents on social media groups and to the police so people can beware,” Vawda said.
