THE residents of The Bluff are being asked to share their thoughts on the Port of Durban’s long-term expansion plans. Ward 66 councillor Zoë Solomon said these meetings are part of a process by the Transnet National Ports Authority, called a Strategic Environmental Assessment (Sea), which will look at the environmental and social effects of developing the port. 

This is a chance for people living on The Bluff to influence decisions that will affect their community for a long time, possibly until 2056.

Proposed developments

The port authority is considering several changes. These include:

• Widening the port entrance channel
• Reconfiguring The Bluff berths
• Expanding Bayhead and Langeberg Road
• Developing a second access route into the port
• Expanding container terminals at pier 1 and point
• Increasing liquid bulk storage at Island View
• Deepening berths at Durban Container Terminal and Maydon Wharf
• Developing new automotive facilities
• Investigating hydrogen, LNG and ammonia infrastructure

Potential concerns

With all the proposed developments come more concerns. These developments could mean more trucks on the road, leading to congestion and air quality and noise levels being affected. Road safety and how hazardous cargo is handled are also factors, as well as the potential effects on marine life and the overall quality of life for people living nearby, especially on The Bluff.

Solomon said that this is an important moment for residents.

“Too often, decisions have been made without ordinary residents being given a genuine opportunity to understand the plans in plain language or to meaningfully influence them. Public participation is most effective when communities are informed, engaged and prepared to ask the difficult questions. Opportunities like this do not come around often, and when they do, we must make the most of them,” said Solomon. 

She added that whether you support further port expansions or have concerns about its impact, this is your chance to be heard.

Meetings to voice your opinions

There are two ways residents can participate. Virtual meeting will be held on Microsoft Teams on Wednesday (August 12) from 10:00 to 12:00. Alternatively, an in-person meeting is scheduled for Thursday (August 13) from 17:30 to 20:00 at N-Shed at the Port of Durban. An interpreter for isiZulu will be available at the physical meeting and the same information will be shared at both sessions.
