POLICE in Wentworth have issued a warning about an increase of car theft in the Merewest area. Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso Gumede said there has been an increase in the theft of motor vehicles in the past few weeks.

“The times at which these vehicles were reported stolen were sporadic, occurring on different days. In the first instance, a vehicle was stolen after the owner had parked it in a business area,” said Gumede.

The other thefts involved vehicles that were parked within residential premises. In these instances suspects gained entry by breaking locks or forcing open electronic gates before stealing the vehicles, and in some cases, items from inside the vehicles.

The suspects in these incidents primarily targeted light motor vehicles, including VW Polos and Toyota Cross.

“The vehicles were reported stolen between 13:30 to 15:00, others during the evening 21:30 and 07:00 and between 21:00 to 06:00 when residents were asleep,” said Gumede.

Residents are encouraged to report cases at Wentworth police station.
