YOLANDI Naicker’s journey started on the streets of Wentworth and has led her to the international stage. She recently represented South Africa at the Face of the Universe International Pageant in Yangon, Myanmar. There, she was named first runner-up and also won the best talent award.

For Naicker, the week-long event was more than just a competition. She saw it as a chance to be an ambassador for her country, participating in interviews, cultural exchanges, leadership activities and giving presentations and performances.

Representing her country

Standing on stage with the South African sash was a powerful moment for Naicker.

“I was not just representing myself. I was representing every person from South Africa who has ever dared to dream beyond their circumstances and every young girl who believes her future can be greater and brighter,” she said.

Even though her journey is taking her from Durban, the lessons learned in Wentworth remain central to her identity. 

“Wentworth will always be home. It is where I learned that strength is built through community, that kindness costs nothing and that no dream is ever too big when you work hard and trust God,” said Naicker. 

Dreaming beyond circumstances

Naicker hopes her success on the international stage will encourage young people across KwaZulu-Natal to look beyond their present situations and believe in their potential.

The seven-day pageant was the culmination of months of preparation. Naicker underwent rigorous fitness training, focused on nutrition and worked on strength and conditioning. She received coaching for runway walks, interview skills, public speaking, and media interactions, alongside countless rehearsals.

This preparation involved personal sacrifices.

“Missing family time, pushing through exhaustion, saying no to comfort and yes to discipline. But I reminded myself every day that representing South Africa was a privilege, and I wanted to arrive knowing I had done everything possible to honour that responsibility,” she said. 

A significant moment for Naicker throughout this experience was her performance in the talent competition, where she showcased the richness of South African culture. This performance earned her the best talent award, making the achievement even more meaningful. 

A strong support structure

Naicker’s achievements were supported by a strong network of family, mentors and coaches. Her husband and children provided consistent encouragement throughout the demanding preparation period. However, Naicker views her title as more than just an award. She sees it as a means to make a greater impact through her organisation, Crown Your Mind. This organisation is dedicated to mental health awareness, empowering women, developing youth, providing mentorship and uplifting communities.

For young people with aspirations, whether in pageantry or other pursuits, Naicker finds inspiration in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
