Bogus police jobs offered for R15K in KZN

The public is warned to be on the lookout for WhatsApp messages offering bogus jobs and report such at the nearest police station.

POLICE in KZN have issued a stern warning regarding a R15 000 fake job scam targeting unsuspecting members of the public.

It is alleged that the scammers are using the identity of a senior police officer to make bogus employment offers appear legitimate.

Police spokesperson in KZN Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said the police have become aware of the WhatsApp messages making the rounds on social media.

“The WhatsApp profile picture used in these bogus job offers is that of the KwaZulu-Natal Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services Major General (Dr) SB Ngcobo. The modus operandi of these scammers is understood to be that of sending WhatsApp messages to unsuspecting members of the public, promising employment in the South African Police Service,” said Magwaza.

According to the police, the scammers will immediately forward an application form to the prospective victim.

“The scammers demand R15 000 for the purported employment opportunity. Victims are however instructed to pay a deposit of R7 500 with the balance payable upon signing employment papers,” said Magwaza.

The public is warned to be on the lookout for such WhatsApp messages and report these at the nearest police station.

Magwaza added, “Employment in the South African Police Service is not for sale. Nobody should be asked to pay to get employed in the police, whoever is doing so is committing a crime.”
