Community rallies around project to warm the elderly

Don't miss the Caxton Cares Square by Square workshop where you can learn how to crochet or knit and be part of this wonderful initiative.

EXCITEMENT around the Caxton Cares Square by Square Project is growing in leaps and bounds with magnificent support from the community after the project launched on February 14.

The workshop, which will be held on March 1, at the South Coast SUN office at 33 Main Road, Doonside, aims at teaching those who want to participate in this exciting project, to either knit or crochet blocks that will be sewed together to make at least 500 knee blankets for the elderly in need.

“We are in need of 21 000 blocks to make the knee blankets and although it seems like a daunting task, with more participations from the community, we can easily reach our target,” said editor of the SUN, Roelien D’Amico.

She added that she has already made around 32 blocks, which is almost enough for one blanket, which should be 42 blocks in total. This exciting new project aims to get the community involved by knitting or crocheting 15cm by 15cm blocks, which will be sewed together to make a 90cm knee blanket for our elderly citizens. Each blanket should have 42 blocks.

The closing date for this project is June 2, with distribution to take place in July. “I am also excited to announce that there are a few spot prizes up for grabs. The person who donated the most wool, or crochet or knitted the most blocks, will win a special treat sponsored by Pia Health and Beauty Spa, Amanzimtoi. We also have breakfasts vouchers from Clearwater Spur in Beach Road to those who are participating in this project.”

To register for the workshop, call Gerda on 031 903 2341, or send an email to sunads@dbn.caxton.co.za. The workshop will start from 13:00 to 15:00 on March 1. Tea, coffee and eats will be served. Each participant should bring their own wool, knitting needles or a 4.5cm crochet hook.

“It would be great if those attending can bring extra wool as well,” Roelien said. Donated wool or blocks can be dropped off at the SUN office, 33 Main Road, Doonside or at The Mudpie Co, 771 Marine Drive, The Bluff. Call Tilly Passmore on 069 658 8291 for more information.
