Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation unite youth with fun-filled festival

Youth from across Durban South gathered for a day around sports, fun and important dialogues on issues plaguing the community’s youth.

THE WENTWORTH Arts and Culture Organisation celebrated Youth Day with a fun-filled and empowering festival at the Transhaven Seaside Home on June 14. The event saw over 250 young people attend from the surrounding community.

The day was packed with activities aimed at inspiring and empowering young people, as well as promote unity and awareness. Sports events kicked off the day with an adrenaline-fuelled rugby and soccer tournament, while a youth symposium offered a platform for discussions, debates and presentations on existing issues that the youth  face. The highlight of the festival was a dance competition that showcased local talent and their creativity.

Jarryd Watson, the artistic director, spoke about the importance of these events.

“Events like these empower young people by providing them with a platform where they get an opportunity to be heard and encouraged to be leaders of tomorrow. It also encourages social cohesion and community-building,” said Watson.

Samantha Maphalala and Davyn Fourie delivered a dramatic skit called “Goldman’s Land”.

He extended his heartfelt appreciation to all the individuals who made it possible for the event to take place.

“I would just like to thank all the young participants and management staff of the Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation, who worked so hard on making the festival event a huge success. Also, a special thanks to our event sponsors, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, Macwash, and the Tirisano Trust,” said Watson.
