Crow says no to plastic this July

The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife is showing their commitment to Plastic Free July by encouraging communities to say no to plastic.

THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) is marking Plastic Free July with a green-friendly call to action, asking people to help reduce plastic pollution by introducing easy-to-make lifestyle changes and recycling.

Clint Halkett-Siddall, director at Crow, said that the organisation is committed to making a tangible contribution towards the fight against plastic pollution.

“It’s Plastic Free July and we want to work with the community to give plastic the boot. At Crow, we’re all about recycling and making a difference, one bottle and one box at a time,” he said.

To support the campaign, Crow is collecting plastic bottles and cardboard boxes and encouraging residents to drop off their recyclables at the centre at 15A Coedmore Avenue, Yellowwood Park. Alternatively contact Crow on 083 212 5281 for more information.

Besides the recycling campaign, Halkett-Siddall encourages everyone to stay away from single-use plastics and opt for more environmentally friendly substitutes whenever possible.

How to support:

The Plastic Free Foundation has shared tips on how regular people can commemorate Plastic Free July:

  • Reusable coffee cups: Take your own or borrow one when picking up a take-away.
  • Loose produce: Buy unpackaged fruit and vegetables rather than plastic-wrapped ones and possibly make use of a lightweight bag to carry it.
  • Reusable bags: Always take your own to cut down on the use of plastic carriers or make use of a reusable shopping bag.
  • Refuse plastic straws: Have a reusable alternative or just say no to straws altogether.
  • Water bottles: Get a long-lasting, refillable bottle rather than buying disposable ones.
  • Meat, fish and deli: Avoid buying too much meat, fish or deli items as they are often packaged in a lot of unnecessary wasteful plastics.
  • The three R’s: Reduce, reuse and recycle to achieve a cleaner and healthier planet.
