EKTA Somera and Rebecca Perumal, both poets from The Bluff, are featured in the recently published anthology, We Are Because We Are. This collection includes the work of 15 writers from different parts of South Africa.

The anthology aims to highlight the common narratives and experiences that connect individuals, despite their diverse origins.

The book’s release was marked by an event at Noah’s Pub and Grill by the Paper Trail Literary Press, an independent publisher. The anthology brings together poets from various backgrounds to explore themes like identity, memory, family, heritage, healing and belonging.

Understanding the anthology

Somera, the founder of Paper Trail Literary Press, said the title itself is inspired by the philosophy of ubuntu, which emphasises that our humanity is intertwined with that of others. The book presents a view of South Africa shaped by resilience and common experiences.

“Every voice carried the collective power of being South African. It was a culmination of passion and dedication to our craft and our community,” said Somera.

Generations united

A highlight of the launch event was a discussion involving poets from different generations. Gaishrie Sharon Singh shared her reflections on being South African and the importance of preserving stories through poetry. Rebecca Perumal, another contributor from The Bluff, offered a younger voice on identity, belonging and the significance of participating in a collection that amplifies the country’s diverse voices. 

“Together, their reflections illustrated how different generations can learn from one another while sharing a common love for South Africa,” said Somera.

The launch was attended by several contributing poets, including Thiveshtha Lutchmiah, Tamia Moonsamy, Keshnie July, Padmani Dorasamy, Svara Naidoo and Tamara Gengan, as well as individuals who support local literature

We Are Because We Are serves as a celebration of connection through uniqueness.
