School’s hockey trio to play for Durban South

Alice Bakah, Amile Hlophe and Zelwande Masimula are the school's latest recruits for the South Durban hockey team

YELLOWWOOD Park Primary pupils Alice Bakah, Amile Hlophe and Zelwande Masimula are the school’s latest recruits for the South Durban hockey team.

The trio participated in this year’s South Durban hockey trials at Montclair Senior Primary School on Wednesday, 27 February.

Various schools took part, including Brighton Beach Primary School, Montclair Senior Primary School and Woodlands Primary School.

Alice, who has been participating in the sport since grade two, said she was ‘scared and excited’ during the U12 trials and was thrilled when it was announced that she had made it through. “It’s the first time I’ve been selected. My cousin in Montclair told me she also made it onto the same team.” The grade six pupil enjoys the sport because ‘it’s a challenging game that teaches me to be strong’.

Amile, who is also on the U12 team, has had a keen interest in the sport since grade one and this is her second selection to the South Durban team. “It felt amazing because I was not sure I would be chosen again – it was a challenging trial, my opponents were very competitive.”

This is also U13 team member Zelwande’s second success in making the regional team. “I’ve loved hockey since creche – I used to play it with a broom,” she laughed. “I’m happy and excited that I’ve made it through again – it’s a fun sport that helps me relax.”
