
Mercy Jacobs was named Student of the Year at the Everest Primary School annual honours evening last Thursday.
The student of the year award is given to the pupil who has done well in academics and extramurals (which may include sports and culture), has a great attitude towards peers and teachers and dsiplays exemplary behaviour.
The honours evening was for all grades and top achievers for each subject.
Personalities emceed the evening with likes of Carlo Macfarlaine who is well known for his acting role in the popular TV show ‘Backstage’.
He was joined by his wife and TV presenter Kim Macfarlaine, they both work for an organisation called 4change Foundation who do community work in schools across South Africa.
“I have retired from teaching but it seems like I can’t leave Everest Primary School, I offer my help when it is needed.
“This school, staff and pupils have kept me going and I love you guys for it,” said Anthea Khan.
From AKTV Andre Hendricks said, “Your past doesn’t determine your future and if teachers and parents could work together they could create magic.”
He asked pupils to repeat after him these words,” If it is to be, it’s up to me.”
Parents and pupils were entertained by Omar Hartley who performed songs the parents could sing along to.
Nonkululeko Ndlovu a well-known producer in the entertainment industry motivated the pupils with a talk themed ‘The power of words.’
She urged the pupils to motivate themselves in the morning by using positive words.
“Be careful with the words you choose because words can be very powerful.
“Always ask yourself ‘With this word am I building them up or breaking them down’ before you say it to someone,” said Ndlovu.
Prefects were announced for 2014, with the Deputy and Head also announced.
