Protest causes havoc on Main Reef road

Protest causing havoc on roads in Roodepoort earlier this week.

The police were called to Roodepoort earlier this week when residents from Durban Deep Informal Settlement took to the streets for the lack of service delivery in the area.-

Residents sang and danced through Main Reef road which slowed the flow of traffic.-

Branches, broken glass, rocks, a broken traffic light and other debris were scattered on Albertina Sisulu Road.-

“They were throwing stones at passing cars. Motorists were asked to use alternative routes such as Albertina Sisulu, Impala and Ontdekkers,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.-

“Police arrested 15 people for public violence. Police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the protesters,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale.-

This is the second protest in the area for the year and tensions in the area are being monitored.-

“It is not safe for motorists to use the area,” said Minnaar.-

One man was shot by the police and later was pronounced died on arrival at the hospital.-

“There were police passing through and the protesters attacked them.-

Shots were fired and later it was discovered that one person had been injured and taken to hospital.-

“I don’t know how many warning shots were fired, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) will investigate,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.
