The lack of discipline in schools is a concern for the Ministry of Basic Education.
Basic Education Deputy Minister Enver Surty says discipline is not the sole responsibility of teachers, but of the society.
“The reality is that we have a huge challenge with regard to discipline in our schools.
“We should look at alternative methods of discipline as opposed to punitive methods,” Surty said.
At a conference dubbed ‘Discipline in Schools Re-visited: Striking a Balance between Ethics and Legislation’, the ministry hopes to transform schools into disciplined and safe environments.
He said: “Lack of discipline could result in anarchy that should be prevented.
“We expect children at school to be in a safe environment.”
Basic Education Director-General Bobby Soobrayan said: “Discipline is a societal challenge and parents and teachers need to work together,” he said.
Soobrayan said a framework was needed to tackle the challenge.
