Nutrition Week aims at raising awareness for portion control

More women are obese than men in South Africa.

With the rate of obesity rising in South Africa, this year’s Nutrition Week campaign aims at raising awareness for portion control.

The theme is “Choose your potion with caution”.

Studies conducted by the Nutrition Society of South Africa show that over 40% of adult women are obese and over the past 10 years, the rate has increased from 27% to 40%.

Children from the age group of 2-5 years are also suffering from obesity with 18.9% for girls and 17.55 for boys.

The NSSA has concluded that more women are obese that men in South Africa.

There are ways of avoiding obesity, Portia Leba from Medirest Compass Group said that being nutritional is very important because it boosts your energy and helps with good skin, nails and eyesight.

“People need to be cautious of what they eat and make sure they drink at least eight glasses of water, eat three types of vegetables and three potions of fruits daily,” said Leba.

She also said that it is important to eat red meat for protein and fish for omega.

“Everyone is advised to have a balanced diet in order to live a healthy lifestyle and avoid being obese,” said Leba.
