Together Action Group hosts drug awareness campaign

Testimonies and performances focusing on drugs the main attraction.

On Saturday, July 4, Together Action Group (TAG) hosted a community drug awareness function at the Bowling Greens in Coronationville.

The function was part of their celebrations for World Drug Free Africa Day and had a lot of entertainment and influential speeches.

The event was also part of their Restorative Justice initiative, a programme that focuses on the recovery and upliftment of drug addicts and minor offenders.

The theme of the event was “Shade out Drug Addiction”.

This means shading out the negative effects of drug addiction and showing the effects of a positive drug free society.

There was a testimony from two former drug addicts who formed part of the Restorative Justice programme.

Bobby Jansen, ex-gangster and one of the founder members at TAG also had a chance to share his experiences and advice to the public.

“In order for the drug pandemic to be lessened, one has to stay a child for as long as you possibly can,” said Jansen.

There was some entertainment from the TAG Afterschool children and a play outlining drug abuse and its negative effects.

With this function TAG plans on developing better systems to deal with the problem.

According to many schools in the area, drug abuse is becoming more evident in primary schools recently and to deal with the situation, teamwork must be established.

Guests that attended include Professor John Rowett from Oxford University, Kofifi Fm local radio station, Community Patrol from Social Development, Dr Robinson principal of Westbury Secondary and parents from the community.

“It’s been a very influential function with a lot of positives and we hope to have a lot of these functions in the future,” said Rhoda Van Buuren who is the head of the afterschool programme.
