Today is #WorldCancerDay

Tobacco causes about 22% of cancer deaths.

World Cancer Day is commemorated every year on February 4.

It is a day dedicated to exploring ways the world can use to fight the deadly disease.

The day was initiated by the World Health Organisation(WHO) and various other organisations which promote  awareness regarding the disease.

This year’s theme is, “We can. I can.”

This theme focusses on the role individuals and collectives can play in raising awareness and getting rid of the global phenomenon which is cancer.

According to the WHO, “Cancer Day is an opportunity to highlight the wide range of actions needed to effectively prevent, treat and control the many forms of cancer.”

Cancer is a form of illness affecting cell growth and it usually spreads across the body. It is estimated that about 22% of cancer related deaths are caused by tobacco.

According to the WHO, “Cancer can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke.

In addition, a significant proportion of cancers can be cured, by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early.”
