Sunshine Centre celebrated their 40th anniversary on Saturday with current and ex staff, parents and pupils.
The centre came in to existence in 1973 after Sylvia Langehoven and a group of mothers of children with disabilities started a babysitting programme.
Each mother took a turn baby sit once a week, giving each other a break while supporting each other.
Through trials and tribulations the group of women grew in to what is now Sunshine Centre where they offer sharing of skills, expertise, resources and training.
Felicity Matross who has a five-year-old daughter at Sunshine Centre, Eldorado Park said she has seen a significant improvement in her daughter.
“From the first day I came into the office I had a wow experience.
“My daughter has cerebral palsy and couldn’t sit or walk, now she can sit on her own, walk with help but the most progress I’ve seen is her speech,” Matross said.
She said her daughter never wants to miss a day of school.
Matross said the staff of Sunshine Centre is warm and friendly which adds to her experience as a parent.
