Municipal Elections kicks off with special votes
A record number of special votes registered at this year’s elections.
About 79 000 registered voters will cast their ballots on special votes on Monday and Tuesday in the province of Gauteng, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed.
Voting stations will be open at 8:00am to welcome those who are able to visit them and cast their votes.
“48 997 are voters who will visit their voting station to cast their votes while 30 121 are persons who will be visited at their homes or places of confinement within their voting districts of registration,” said IEC spokesperson Bapela.
Voters who will be visited at their homes include the elderly and those who are unable to visit their voting stations due to their physical or medical condition.
Special votes are by pre-approval and only voters who have been approved and whose names appear on the list of special votes may vote on the dates allocates for special votes.
The Electoral commission issued a warning to those who did not apply for special votes not to try and go to voting stations until Wednesday.
More than 700 000 South Africans from across the country have registered for special votes this year making it the highest since the first Municipal Elections in 1996.
More than 26 million people are expected to vote in this year’s elections.
