WATCH: Lonwabo lwesizwe tackling women’s issues

The "I am a woman campaign" is hosted twice a year

It has often been said that the way women are treated within a society is a measure of that society’s overall state. The Greater Eldorado Park needs to take a hard look at how women are treated within the community, judging by the high incidences of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and rape.

Lonwabo lwesizwe (loosely translated as ‘joy of the nation’), hosted their annual I am a woman event at the Don Mateman Civic Centre in Extension Seven on March 27.

Established in 2014, the group are a non-profit organisation which focuses on youth development through exposure to skills and activities as a diversionary measure from illegal behaviours such as substance abuse and other criminal activities.

Director Paris Makaringe said, “We host the I am a woman campaign twice a year to raise awareness about issues affecting women.

“This year’s event at the Don Mateman Civic Centre has been the biggest thus far and plans are in the pipeline to host another one in Ennerdale tentatively scheduled for August 9.”

Guest speakers included Nicole Pedro (26), Morwesi Theledi (34) and Shakira Choonara (34), who, through sharing their personal experiences, had the audience in tears.

Pedro recounted a life of abuse by a close family member and how she engaged in destructive behaviour to cope with the mental scars.

Theledi, a recently released offender, described her involvement in bank fraud and issued a warning to the young women about the dangers of being swayed by the lure of easy money.

Shakira Choonara is a motivational speaker and life coach who encouraged young women to strive towards achieving their goals and stay on course towards a life free from substance abuse and its associated destructive behaviours.

Diana Baloyi was the master of ceremonies and her energetic delivery provided much entertainment as she touched on issues affecting young women in our community.

Graduates from the Hadassah Centre for Women in De Deur, put their new found beauty therapy skills to the test as they pampered attendees with oil massages and make-up.
