Nanduwe and Wata associations at war again – leaving commuters stranded

Taxi associations keep pointing fingers at each other.

The ongoing conflict between Nanduwe Taxi Association and Wata Taxi Association has resulted in a taxi strike this morning.

A representative of Nanduwe (who did not want to be named) alleged that Wata is to be blamed for the chaos that has left many commuters stranded.

“The cause of this taxi strike is because of the ongoing conflict in Mofolo, Dube and Phefeni taxi routes between Nanduwe and Wata.

“Government has intervened and concluded that the routes belong to Nanduwe but the road belongs to the government. They went on to say that Wata can use the road but they can’t load or offload passengers at Nanduwe’s route. Wata’s response was ‘over our dead bodies’,” he said.

“Government must come and impound the taxis of the invaders, that’s the only way that this strike will end,” he concluded.

On the other hand, George Maphalala, Spokesperson of Wata said: “Nanduwe Association is the one that attacked their drivers yesterday morning.

“The people from Nanduwe hired hitmen to attack our drivers. We decided to march to the Minister of Transport’s offices to hand over a memorandum. We are now waiting for them to set up a meeting,” he said.

It is unknown when the strike will end.

Gauteng police have managed to arrest three suspects in connection with the violence.
