No sign of imminent change for Kliptown locals

Live electricity wires.

For years now access to electricity and clean running water have been basic human rights that the people of Kliptown have been deprived of.

Residents said that it feels like they are living in rural areas because few homes have access to clean running water and they are without electricity on a daily basis.

Kliptown is the oldest residential district of Soweto. The area was known for its informal settlements however the area now consists of a mixture of purpose-built housing as well as a large number of shacks.

Kliptown is also known for its poverty, crime and its illegal electricity connections.

Many homes within the area do not have access to electricity. Homes that do have access to electricity are connected because of the use of illegal connections that are in the open for everyone to see.

Wires hang over the homes of residents and can sometimes be seen on the ground. illegal connections pose a danger to residents especially children who are at risk of dying due to being electrocuted.
