Brazen burglars’ break-in at Bernard Isaacs Primary School
The school has no security on the premises

On July 17, Principal Jeff Davey from the Bernard Isaacs Primary School in Coronationville received a call stating that there was a break-in at the school.
According to Davey, the equipment that was stolen was to the value of R30 000, this consisted of copper piping, taps, two long ladders, scaffolding and eight basins which were broken.
“These things have been here for two years and now that we’ve started using them to build, now they decide to break in,” said Davey.
The school is currently undergoing some construction with the new section for the feeding scheme.

The construction equipment was stored in the foundation phase boy’s toilets since the project is taking place just outside of that area.
According to the principal, the construction equipment could have at least cost about R20 000 and the broken basins and piping a further R10 000 or more.
Basins were found outside broken and lying close to the school wall, Davey assumes that the thieves had broken it so that they could get the taps from it.
“The damage is really unnecessary,” he said.

On a positive note, the suspects did not steal the roof sheeting, but the principal and a few helpers are more cautious now and have moved the equipment to a secured location in the school.
The school has no security on the premises but the armed response division of the ADT security company conduct regular patrols to ensure that further burglaries are discouraged.
At the time the break-in had not been registered with the police, but Davey said that he would report the theft at the Sophiatown Police Station.
