Eldos: Old looping system causes mayhem in Sand street

Eldos residents disappointed in City Power for not providing the necessary maintenance and not fixing the problem

For approximately six years, residents of Eldorado Park Proper Sand Street have been experiencing problems with regards to their electricity.

According to Lettie Nell, a resident of Proper Sand Street, this problem has been going on for about six years, every winter and during summer they do not experience any problems.

“The lights will start to trip around the beginning of May, sometimes it would go off for days on end,” Nell said.

Nell and her fellow residents have embarked on numerous ventures to the offices of City Power in Lenasia, to address this issue.

The residents in the street say that they are disappointed in City Power for not providing the necessary maintenance and not fixing the problem.

In one of the houses there is a little girl living with liver cancer stage two and her brother that was born with a hole in his heart and according to the concerned residents, electricity is a necessity for them.

The spokesperson for City Power, Virgil James said, “City Power is fully aware of the problems that are experienced by residents in and around Sand Street in Old Eldorado Park. The issue here is that most of the houses are on a loop system.

“It is an old system where a number of houses are connected via one cabling and whenever there is an overload of the network due to possible illegal connections or the number of houses on one property, it causes a strain on the network resulting in a power outage.”

He added, “It may not necessarily be due to all four houses that are on that loop system, one of those houses may cause the rest of the houses to experience a power outage.”

In finding a solution to their problem, James added, “We are looking at addressing that problem by installing and making changes to the current system that is in place.”
