Readers R Leaders (RRL) is a non-profit organisation based in Westbury who are hard at work to eliminate the negative perceptions of the area by improving English reading, operating book-clubs, assisting school libraries, arranging motivational talks and spreading a culture of reading.

Their programme has been successful with learners from three schools in our community.

RRL have reading sessions with learners who have difficulty reading and a volunteer will sit and help the learner with their reading on a one-on-one basis.

The organisation also had a writing competition for the Grade Three, Four, and Five learners of Dowling Primary School in July this year, announcing the winner in August.

Chanelle Louw, a Grade Three learner at the school, won the writing competition and walked away with a brand-new mountain bike.

This past week, RRL rewarded learners who participated in their programme this year with a new book and a certificate for their commitment to the programme throughout the year.

“The presentations are also an opportunity for our volunteers to be proud of the work they so diligently do.

“They are assisting learners to improve their reading. Similar presentations were held at Newclare and Bosmont Primary Schools. Readers R Leaders managed to assist total of 100 learners directly during the 2017 school year,” said RRL founder, Cyril Turton.

He added, “It’s important for us to demonstrate that we have success stories in the community. The one way that we can turn our community around from drugs and anti-social activities is to have a highly educated community.”

According to Turton, all praises should go to the volunteers of Readers R Leaders, because without them the organisation would not be able to function.

This is also an opportunity to call on our communities to consider volunteering and to be part of the vibrant volunteer team of RRL for next year.
