Santa has his little helpers working everywhere

Festive season gives people reason to give back.

For the past five years, Cathleen Jones started and has been running a local chapter of the Santa Shoebox project. Besides being a social worker, Jones is a well-known member of the community. She is a social worker for the Family and Marriage Society of South Africa (FAMSA).

The project took place at the Coronationville Recreation Centre on December 7 and on December 8 it continued to run at the Riverlea Recreation Centre. Natalie Goodman, founder of the Dare2Read South Africa described Jones as a well-known within the community that she resides in as well as the areas surrounding her workplace. Goodman said that Jones is a dedicated humanitarian who would always go beyond the call of duty.

Goodman said, “Cathleen has in itself contributed to the development of Dare2Read and seen the earnest need to assist with projects such as the collaboration with us for the 16 Days Activism campaign. Furthermore, Cathleen has availed a platform for Dare2Read to receive 100 Santa shoeboxes and has also given us the privilege to be part of handing over 1100 gifts to children between the ages of one and 18-years-old.”

Goodman continues as she said, “Now that to me is Ubuntu.” She then added, “I want us all to know that without each other, we cannot achieve anything, we need people to build people. We as a community are rich in our diversity which is what makes this so unique. We can turn nothing into something.”

She concluded as she said that she salutes Jones for the person that she is, the work that she has done before, the work that she is currently doing and the work that she is still going to do. Jones would like to send out a thank you note for Riverlea Recreation Centre and her peer volunteers for the success of all the projects that were conducted.
