The Phasa Ngenkani Programme has lived up to its name

Passing Against All Odds.

The Phasa Ngenkani Programme has lived up to its name, and all its young participants have passed. The programme’s name translates to passing against all odds.

The Diepkloof police introduced a programme for errant learners who refuse to do their homework or participate in school work as well as learners who were ill-disciplined last year and it has had a tremendous impact.

The programme was initiated to change the mindset of learners who have been identified as truant early on and are accepted into the programme.

Bongiwe Masondo explained that the Diepkloof Youth Desk receives complaints from the school, the police station or from parents who need assistance in reinforcing discipline in their children.

The learner is accepted into the programme and they are required go to the station every day after school to revise school work and do homework and assignments under supervision.

Zenzile Tshabalala of the Diepkloof Community Policing Forum said, “We have a problem of children who are lured into gangsterism, drugs, and crime and we are doing our best to steer them the other way.”

The programme is reaping positive rewards as is attested to by the 100 percent pass rate they have achieved after only one year since its inception.

“It is an honour to see that some of the things we do as an office produce positive people and results,” said Tshabalala.

The learners who were part of the programme were focusing on their school work at the Diepkloof Police Station, like Caroline Candze (13) who refused to do her homework before her mother brought her to Phasa Ngenkani.

Lehlohonolo Nakedi didn’t want to study at home, so his mother brought him to the station for the programme. He said, “Being here really helped because I was actually able to study and revise.”

Parents interested in getting the necessary assistance with their children to can dial 011 933 7458 to enrol for this year’s classes which start on February 5.
