Senior citizens from the Eldorado Park Active Aging Team (AAT) believe that your age should never determine your level of fitness. Peter Farris (61), who is an AAT member never shies away from a challenge and makes sure that he is at every training session.

The team meets at the Eldorado Park Stadium in Extension Nine on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 11.30 am.

The group focuses on different sporting disciplines to accommodate every member of the team.

This includes brisk walking- a fast-paced walk from one point to the next, the 400m to 800m relay, pass-the-ball, goal shooting, rugby throw and Jukskei which is a local sport that originated in 1743. The point of the sport is to use wooden pins to throw at a stick which is planted in the ground.

The team’s coach, Tom Cornelius, is very optimistic that his team will do well in this years’ Golden Games which is set to take place in two months’ time.

He said, “We are currently training for the cluster games and hopefully we will make it the provincial level and even national level.”

He added that the team has a three-time winning champion in their midst. Edna Harvey has been the brisk walk champion for three years running.

According to active senior, Mary Erasmus, she joined the team and has never felt better. She said that before joining the team, she suffered from a number of ailments like diabetes and high blood pressure.

“All my ailments are a thing of the past now. I feel so much better. My doctor told me that my blood pressure is back to normal and that my diabetes has gone away,” she said.

The Active Aging team encourages all senior citizens in Eldorado Park to join their team.

“Those who can make it to the stadium in Extension Nine should please join us because the benefits of exercising are really great for the body.

“We don’t do high-intensity activities, but rather focus on mild activities that won’t harm our team. The key to a healthy lifestyle and longer life is regular exercise,” said coach Cornelius.
