Residents in Eldorado Park flats frustrated by living conditions

Calls for repairs fall flat.

Ailing infrastructure, overcrowding and poor living conditions are adding to the woes of Eldorado Park residents who are growing frustrated at what they perceive to be government’s disregard for to their plight.

Neighbouring Freedom Park residents, fed up with their unanswered please for resolutions to these issues, took to the streets a few weeks ago and blockaded roads and stoning passing vehicles.

Tenants living in flats in Eldorado Park are taking a stand and demanding that their concerns be heard and addressed by government.

A flat inhabitant, Leonard Bougaard, said, “We are extremely disturbed by government officials with regards to the provincial flats that are not being maintained.”

According to tenants, government officials have told them that they live in the flats rent free and that they should stop complaining.

“The inspector of housing told us the same thing, they expect us to live in bad conditions and that is not fair,” said Trevor Fisher.

Their complaints concern the basic maintenance of the flats and range from cracks walls, broken window frames, rickety steel frames, and broken slabs, staircases and loose handrails.

In a number of instances, the cracks which are visible on the flat exteriors, have widened and moved to the interior.

The constantly blocked toilets and leaking taps have compounded what is a serious safety hazard for the occupants.

Veronica Kaars (62), an Extension One flat resident, said, “A few months ago, contractors came to assess the damage and replaced our geysers and water pipes in some units.

“These geysers and water pipes have been giving us problems ever since. They are leaking and so are the pipes.

“They did not come back to fix the mess they made. Our walls were drilled into, but the access holes were never re-plastered.”
