A new season with a fitness chance

Fitness Chance a group which promotes health and fitness in the community of Riverlea had their first session for 2019.

Fitness Chance, an initiative started by Clint Mathavhatha and fitness instructor Katlego Mokwena back in 2017 had their first session for 2019 at the Sasol Garage in Riverlea. Fitness Chance is a group which promotes health and fitness in the community of Riverlea.

“The reason why we started Fitness Chance is that the youngsters in the area are very idled, there is not much to do. If there are boys who don’t play soccer then there’s nothing else for them so we thought, we would cater for everyone and every industry. I believe that every industry needs fitness and that’s how we came about it,” explained Mathavhatha.

The group gathers every Wednesdays at 6 pm at different parks within Riverlea and every week their sessions differ from aerobics, boot camp with an optical course, walks, jogging, hiking, and Mathavhatha made mention that they will soon be incorporating dance like Zumba into their routine.

There are different age groups who workout together and when asked how do these workouts help others, Mathavhatha explained: “We had one girl that was at school and she didn’t really do well, she joined us and her lifestyle started changing.

“I believe that fitness helps with memory, it helps with thinking and it improved this girl in terms of school. There are about two guys that have been on drugs and they joined and their lifestyle is changing slowly, drug addiction is tough, its not just something that one can get off easily but we like to encourage them.”

Posters at local shops in Riverlea had the saying ‘New season, with a new reason’ Mathavhatha said that they came up with it because last year was a bit tough for them but people want to do this for different reasons so the saying goes with each individual’s lifestyle.

“Some people do it for weight loss, some people do it for their blood pressure, some just want to keep fit and some take it as a hobby so each person has their reason in the new season,” added Mathavhatha.

The first themed dress code for the year was white T-shirts which according to the founder represents ‘a fresh start’. All sessions are completely free and you can follow the group ‘Fitness Chance’ on Facebook.

In concluding with the interview Mathavhatha said: “I would just like for our community to start standing together and do whatever it takes to work together as one.”
