FOTOS: Men & women in blue honoured for their valiance and selflessness

The Sophiatown Police Station had their medal parade and recognition of the top performers of 2018 on February 1.
This was in aid of celebrating National Police Day which took place on January 25. The ceremony started with a scripture reading and national anthem.

Officer Lerato Josè said: “We are commemorating the men and women in blue who died while on duty in the communities in South Africa. The annual ceremony is held in honour of those men and women who died in the line of duty, it is also to highlight the scourge of police killings in South Africa.

“Another purpose is to enhance safety and sensitize all police officials of their personal safety and to address compliance with applicable national instructions, standing orders, and to share safety measures and guidelines.”

The Sergeants who were awarded for their ten years of service were: M.K Maphologela, M.F Magagane, T. Kgole, M.I Mdlalose, T.E Munyai, J.R Lekgetho, T.D Mthombeni, T.F Khosa, I.M Lekalakala, K.J Chuene, M.I Baloyi, S.T Mabunga, M.S Sebone, K.L Tshikare, P.T Mokoena, K.J Myeni, M.J Kale, P.C Khoza, M.V Thameganye, M.J Magangwa and Constable P.P Letsoalo. Lieutenant colonel A.T Mufamadi received medals for his twenty and thirty years of service in the police force.

Station Commander Brigadier Susan Crafford said: “We are celebrating police month and it is such an honour for me because today, ten years back, I was appointed as the station commander her at Sophiatown police.

Loyalty goes both ways, all of you who are standing here at the parade know me for ten years and I can tell you that you have been loyal to me, you’ve been faithful to me so let us continue with the loyalty.”

“Congratulations to you all for your medals, if I have to look back to the performances in the past ten years and you see where we coming from, we’ve made a huge difference at the Sophiatown police and its because of management and members who are standing here today.”

“We all here belong to the blue culture so let us please remain faithful and leave corruption. If we look back on the year 2018, we had a lot of challenges and these officers were always there for me.”

Josè recited a poem about faithful service delivery and for the police officers to be steadfast in what they are doing. Top performing officers of 2018 were called up and were rewarded with certificates. After the ceremony, the officers all had lunch together.
