Gauteng police arrest 1 064 suspects in Operation Shanela
Gauteng police arrested 1 064 suspects during a high-density Operation Shanela crackdown across the province’s five policing districts.
The Gauteng police arrested 1 064 suspects during the high-density Operation Shanela (OS) that was conducted across the province’s five districts on August 29.
The operation focused on combating various crimes, tracing wanted suspects and ensuring compliance with the law. Among those arrested were 116 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 163 suspects were arrested for being in the country without required documentation.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Major General Fred Kekana led a high- density provincial operation in the Jeppe and Cleveland policing precincts.
During the operation, 84 individuals were arrested at a roadblock for being in the country illegally, 10 liquor outlets were closed for non- compliance, while 13 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Gauteng detectives arrested 731 suspects overnight for various offences, including 176 suspects arrested for crimes against women and children.
OS continues to demonstrate the commitment of the SAPS and its law enforcement partners to intensify the fight against crime and ensure safer communities.
