Members of the HSS community celebrated for their creative collections and digital contributions

Celebrating Humanities and Social Science.

The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Science (NIHSS) held their 4th annual Humanities and Social Science (HSS) awards at The Market Theatre in Newtown on March 14.

The awards were held to celebrate the members of the HSS community. The award categories were for books (fiction and non-fiction), creative collections and digital contributions.


Winner for Best visual art Kitso Lynn Lelliott.

There were over 70 entries for these awards. The Deputy Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela said during his speech, “An event such as this is important to recognise the constitution of the higher education sphere of the humanities and social sciences, the discipline of the humanities and social sciences are pivotal on how we view our society and its transformations, the role that humanities and social science play cannot be taken lightly, they teach us a range of skills and reasoning to certain solutions.”

HSS awards were judged by 28 judges who had the difficult task of shortlisting and choosing a winner in each category.


 


The awards given were for Best fiction edited volume (winner Recognition: An anthology of South African short stories by David Madalie), Best fiction single-authored volume (winners Dancing the Death Drill by Fred Khumalo and Shadow play by Alison Lowry), Best exhibition catalogue(winner Athlone in mind by Heidi Grunebaum and Kurt Campbell), Best musical composition/ arrangement (winner Kaholo and Letå Atå I for Organ), Best visual art (Abénaa/ Alzire/ Dandara/ Tsholofelo by Kitso Lelliott), Best non-fiction edited volume(From Protest to Challenge by Gail Gehart, Teresa Barnes, Anthony Bugg-Levine, Thomas Karis and Nimrod Mkele), Best non-fiction monograph (The Man Who Founded the ANC by Bongani Ngqulunga). The awards started off and ended with a musical performance by Nomfundo Xaluva. After some awards were given, a former award winner for Best Public Performance 2018 Kafta’s Ape was performed by actor Tony Miyambo.
