Alcohol, marijuana (dagga), cocaine, tik and heroin are some of the most frequently used substances in this country, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

“Substance abuse is an enormous social problem in South Africa, as elsewhere, and it’s increasing every day. Alcohol, marijuana (dagga), cocaine, tik and heroin are some of the most frequently used substances in this country, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

Although there is no magic wand when it comes to treating substance abuse and addiction, help is available for patients and their families,” this is according to the article on the website: www.netcare.co.za which was published on June 22, 2018.

Many blame unemployment for the social ills in our community and with many rehab programmes coming up there still seems to be a rise in substance abuse in our community.

To try and raise awareness on the social problem, on May 31, a substance abuse awareness campaign was held at Zamimpilo Informal Settlement to raise awareness on substance abuse and the effects of substance abuse.

According to communications officer Constable Phumi Kraai from the Langlaagte Police Station, it was various stakeholders who gave details of services rendered by their departments.

“A special thank you to COJ social workers, Department of Social Development, Langlaagte Police Station, Emergency Management Services (EMS), Department of Health, Environmental Health, City Parks, SmartStart, and ANOVA Health Institute for coming together and making sure that the people that we serve know where to go for help,” said Constable Kraai.
