Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) church continue to feed the Eldo’s community
Pastor Amos Parker’s legacy continues.
With poverty and unemployment so rife in the Greater Eldorado Park community, the late Pastor Amos Parker’s legacy continues to bring hope to the needy. Having built two churches, Parker always had a passion for serving the community.
“He was a great man, a soft spoken man who wanted peace at all times. He worked hard to bring about change within the community. We lost a good man and it is up to us to continue serving the people of this community,” said Nellie Parker, Pastor Parker’s widow.
Having spent his last years pastoring at the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) church in old Eldos, Parker started a soup kitchen with the aim of feeding, nourishing and counselling the children in neighbouring streets.

“He loved children and that’s why he started the feeding scheme. It broke his heart knowing that families went to bed hungry. He made it his mission to make a difference in the lives of our people,” said Nellie.
“Every Tuesday morning, a group of us get together to start cooking lunch for children after school. The numbers have grown over the years but this year hunger and poverty is at its worst. We are feeding more and more residents every week. Parents have started accompanying their children, our people are struggling,” she added.
Una Vollenhoven, one the AFM feeding scheme volunteers said that it takes great strength to be able to serve the community.
“Its never an easy task. Tuesdays are difficult days because I am reminded by how people genuinely have nothing. That said, it brings joy to my heart knowing that I am helping make a difference in the lives of residents, even if its just for one day,” said Vollenhoven.

According to Nellie, the late Pastor Parker was also passionate about empowering the community.
“He started computer classes so that youngsters could find work. He also spent his time working with abused children. He also wanted more for everyone, he wanted to make an impact,” said Nellie.
“He left us with so many lessons. He was never idle, he was a creator. I will make sure his legacy continues,” she added.
The AFM feeding scheme feeds over a hundred residents on a week basis. “We would appreciate any kind of food donations to help feed the people of Eldorado Park,” Nellie concluded.
