FOCUS: Explore Tsonga people’s staple foods

Learn more about the staple food of the Tsonga people who are well known for their colourful dress code (The colour blockers).

Welcome to the month where one gets to celebrate his or her culture without fear, the most colourful month in all 12.

September is a month where all Africans are encouraged to practice their culture freely and enjoy their staple foods. Different cultures eat different food.

Mopani worms(Masonja) – soak them into warm water while you fry your onion, add tomatoes and add them wait for it to boil, add salt. wait for it for atleast 5 minutes to cook

Collard greens( swiphasu) – You boil water, add cooking soda, add the green collard and then you wait for it to boil for at least 5 minutes. You then add nuts and salt.

Locusts or grasshoppers (Tinjiya) – found in the bush during summer. you fry it and eat it.


Ground nuts and beans – you just add water and salt. let it boil until it’s ready to eat

Okra (Mandandi) – Boil water, add your okra and then add Bicarbonate Soda.
