SAPS recovers over 80 rounds of ammunition at Roodepoort home

Two firearms were also seized and will undergo ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes.

On January 5, members of the Gauteng Organised Crime Tracing Team and Police Emergency Services Flexi arrested a 36-year-old man in Roodepoort after discovering two rifles — an AK-47 and a .308 semi-automatic — as well as more than 80 rounds of ammunition.

According to reports, the police received a tip-off about unlicensed firearms being stored in a specific house in the area.

“A team from two police units was mobilised to follow up on the information,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

More than eighty rounds of ammunition were also recovered.

The man found at the residence was arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

He is expected to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in due course.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, commended the team for their swift response to the received tip-off. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were involved in any other criminal activities.
