Remembering Winnie Madikizela-Mandela by honouring women
The Commemorative Blanket came with a certificate of authenticity specifically signed by Mama Winnie herself.
In remembering the birth date of the late Winnie-Madikizela Mandela, the Mama Winnie Mandela Commemorative Legacy Blanket Group got together to honour women who do extraordinary work in their churches and the community with the commemorative blanket. One of the elderly people who was honoured on the day was Agnes Mateane who is not only the Lady Arch Bishop but has a heart of gold and is analysed by her supporters as one of the people who has a great deal of helping the community just like Mama Winnie did when she was alive.
All the drama happened at Phiri where various churches combined to honour the day of Madikizela-Mandela.
The Commemorative Blanket came with a certificate of authenticity specifically signed by Mama Winnie herself.
According to Mmabatho Ranake of the Commemorative Legacy Blanket Group, at the time Madikizela was signing the blanket she didn’t know who would receive it so instead of names, each certificate has a unique number.
“Were honouring women who are doing extraordinary work in their communities and we looked at how does that impact the lives of young people. “We realised that many young people can talk about their problems with Mateane and identified if she can be able to assist in those hiccups found that she is among the women we had chosen in the community. “So we decided to honour her as well with other women in the community,” said Ranake.
She said the blanket is specially designed for women who are doing good in their community and who promote the Winnie Mandela legacy.
“We honoured Arch Bishop Mateane with the blanket and thanked her for opening her home children who do not have parents and supports them,” said Ranaka.
Mateane was in great jubilation saying that it is a great honour to see that people realise her duties in the community and said she continues to help as much as she can. The late Madikizela-Mandela was born on September 26 and passed away on April 2, 2018, at the age of 81.
She was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician, and the wife of Nelson Mandela. She served as a Member of Parliament as well.
