Eldorado Park house engulfed in flames
The following items were destroyed in the fire; bedroom suite, all clothing and shoes, and diabetic and high blood pressure machines.
On Thursday, February 6 – at 89 George Camp Crescent Mahala Park Eldorado Park, Edna, and David Kelmovitz went to church at 6.30 pm and Mrs. Kelmovitz remembers switching off her stove, tv, and the refrigerator because of load shedding. While at church, at the estimated time of 8 pm, residents around their area came to the church at Delrado Primary School and they started shouting ‘come, come your house is burning’.
The Pastor and his wife were stunned and asked: “who are you talking to?” and the residents replied by saying: “it’s your house!” When they arrived at their home, the community members had already put out part of the fire and there was only a small fire coming towards the dining area.
The fire started from the top because the wardrobes burnt from the top. The main bedroom along with the two side bedrooms burnt down completely. The toilet was also burnt badly.

“Upon inspection, I noticed that the entire bedroom and all of its contents were completely burnt down,” said Edna, the elder pensioner.
The following items were destroyed in the fire; bedroom suite, all clothing and shoes, and diabetic and high blood pressure machines.
It has been raining quite heavily and frequently and Mr. and Mrs. Klemovitz have had no proper sleep from when the incident has occurred.
“MMC Margaret Arnolds was one of the very first people who came to our home and gave us some mattresses and blankets with a bucket of supplies containing samp and beans, a tin of fish, tin of baked beans, a packet of noodles and tea bags,” said Mr. and Mrs Kelmovitz.
Furthermore, the news they received from MMC Arnolds was just as bad. They were advised that because they have a title deed, the Council cannot help them towards the fixing of their home.
The elderly couple was disappointed even further after being promised by MMC Arnolds that she would go back to them, she still has not done so. After speaking to MMC Arnolds regarding other possible means of helping the pensioners in other areas she replied by saying “we will see what can be done”.
“We are rather going to take our pension money and buy meat and we are going to be selling pap and meat to try and raise funds to fix our home.”
They also added that they hope the funds will be enough so that they can move into their garage because that is the only part of the house with a proper roof that hasn’t burnt.
They are living without electricity and are sleeping in an ‘open house’.
