Eldorado Park substation upgrade project resumes

City of Johannesburg (COJ) Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department Cllr Mpho Moerane facilitated the resumption of the construction of Eldorado Park Substation, that started on March 23.

City of Johannesburg (COJ) Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department Cllr Mpho Moerane facilitated the resumption of the construction of Eldorado Park Substation, which started on March 23.

The project has been delayed since 2015 due to issues and an illegal closure. The MMC’s office had a meeting with stakeholders, community leaders, local business representatives, community liaison officers (CLOs), and the main contractor, which resulted in the project resuming. Four new main contractors have been appointed, and the project was given the green light to commence.

“We are happy that the work resumed without further disruptions, and the project is alive,” said MMC Moerane. “We have agreed with all the stakeholders that work on the Eldorado Park substation cannot be delayed any further because of the risks involved in ensuring a reliable supply of electricity to the community”.

Twenty Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP), eight local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises SMMEs out of the initial thirty, were appointed from the community alongside the CLO and local labourers.

The MMC also noted that City Power met with stakeholders over some time, especially organized SMME business, and accommodated most of their proposals, from rates to increasing the number of SMMEs and the EPWP, where all agreed to work starting in earnest. An amount of R15million has been budgeted for this first phase of the project, which is expected to be completed in June.

The second phase will resume in July and is expected to last for a year. The MMC’s office has also taken precautionary measures to ramp up our security to monitor and ensure that there are no disruptions on site. Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the SAPS will be on standby should there be any disruptions.
