The organisation was awarded the international accolade from the British company, Acquisition International at the Non-Profit Organisation Award 2023, under the category ‘The most empowering Disability Education NPO 2023’.

According to the organisation’s founder Shaun Soko, while they were still shocked and surprised by their international recognition, the award is an indication that they are in a right path

He said this signified that determination and hard work ultimately pays, and that it means their services respond to the needs of people living with disabilities.

“Yes, there was a level of excitement, but a restrained excitement when we receive the news. We were actually surprised to have managed to scoop this award from an international company especially because we are an organisation that operates in the township of Soweto.

You would expect such to happen to the organisations that operates in first world countries or perhaps those who operate in Sandton, but, we are extremely excited to have done it and we are looking forward to do even better going forward,” Soko added.

He said their aim is to dispel the notion that persons with disabilities are not capable enough and they are unfortunately always judged in everything they do.

He said after receiving the award now everyone at the organisation feels rejuvenated and that probably these services are required by the whole of South Africa.

“You can see people are now motivated and eager to do even more,” he said.

Lead Change Development was established in 2011 with the prime objective of alleviating poverty through the provision of opportunities for persons with disabilities in townships.

Since its inception, the organisation has made great strides and been able to place over 40 disabled learners in permanent employment and over 200 in different learnerships.

“Look, we are a non-profit organisation with a goal to educate and empower individuals living with disabilities.

“We target previously disadvantaged youths by offering professional ICT focused training and various skills development programmes at no cost to the beneficiaries,” Soko explained.
