Eskom’s generation issues lead to Stage 3 load shedding

Stage 3 load shedding implemented across city power supply areas.

City Power (CP) has confirmed the implementation of stage three load-shedding beginning at 17:00 on Friday, January 3.

This decision comes after Eskom’s announcement to reinstate load shedding due to multiple breakdowns in their generation fleet.

According to CP, this measure is necessary to comply with regulatory requirements and ensure the stability of the electricity grid.

Load shedding will affect all areas within CP’s supply, as per Eskom’s declaration.

Customers are advised to stay updated on specific affected areas and schedules, which will soon be published on CP’s website and social media platforms.

Isaac Mangena, CP spokesperson, shared the company’s perspective on the situation, stating that Eskom’s announcement comes after over 300 days of reprieve, which allowed them to recover their network fleet and bring most of the plants back into service.

“However, due to ongoing challenges in Eskom’s generation fleet, we are now forced to implement this load shedding to protect the grid and maintain a stable power supply for our customers.”

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by load shedding, Mangena emphasized the importance of responsible electricity usage during this period.

“We urge customers to use electricity sparingly to avoid overloading the network, which is one of the primary reasons we had to enforce load reduction in certain areas. Load shedding also exposes our network to theft, and we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around our electricity infrastructure,” he added.

The load-shedding announcement follows a long period of stability, with over 300 days without significant interruptions, allowing CP to strengthen its network.

However, due to the current challenges with Eskom’s generation fleet, customers are urged to be patient and cooperative during this necessary measure.
