Success beyond verbal communication in Deaf Empowerment Firm
The Protea Glen resident, Ntandosi Hermanus, celebrates her promotion as a cleaning supervisor at a hotel in Johannesburg and making it against all odds as a deaf woman.
The Deaf Empowerment Firm (DEF) is proud to celebrate the great candidates, Ntandosi Hermanus’s promotion to a cleaning supervisor position at Thaba Eco Hotel in Johannesburg.
The CEO of the DEF, Alex Msitshana, said Hermanus’s journey started when she joined a leadership programme for this role and since then she has shown the capabilities that deaf people carry.
“This achievement is not only a personal milestone for her and the DEF but also a shining example of her employer’s commitment to creating an inclusive workplace.

“Their willingness to embrace change and invest in meaningful initiatives has paved the way for this success and set a benchmark for organisational transformation.
“Her success vividly demonstrates that when Deaf talent is given the right platform and nurturing environment, excellence and leadership follow,” Msitshana said.
Msitshana added that at the DEF their work goes beyond skills development and employment placement.
“We partner with organisations to drive systemic change; conducting disability audits, supporting policy reform, and advising on best practices for inclusive organisational change. By integrating these elements, we help create environments where deaf individuals can thrive and contribute fully to the success of the organisation.”
Speaking about her great achievement, Hermanus said, “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity, this achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance, patience, and self-belief.
“As a deaf woman, I have faced many challenges, including negative attitudes and fears about communication in the workplace.
“However, I’ve always believed in the possibility of success, and with the support of my beautiful daughters, I’ve been able to rise above these obstacles.”
“The DEF has played a pivotal role in my journey. Through their programmes, I have gained valuable skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose.
