Joburg informal traders get schooled on city by-laws

JMPD’s Community Outreach Unit is working closely with informal traders to ensure compliance with the city's informal trading by-laws.

The JMPD Community Outreach Unit continues to play a crucial role in educating informal traders about the city’s informal trading by-laws.

In recent weeks officers have been engaging with traders on the ground in the Joburg Inner City, providing information and guidance on designated trading areas, proper trading practices, and the critical importance of maintaining cleanliness.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the outreach efforts are aimed at emphasizing the need for all informal traders to operate within the designated trading zones and in a manner that respects the rights of other residents and businesses.

The JMPD recognizes the vital role informal trading plays in the city’s economy and urges traders to familiarise themselves with the by-laws.

“These operations are not intended to hinder legitimate trade. Instead, they aim to create a more organised and hygienic trading environment for the benefit of everyone,” said Fihla.
