Suspects nabbed in connection with attempted ATM bombing in Protea

Chief of police Patrick Jaca commended the successful intervention by the Tactical Response Unit in preventing a planned ATM bombing and apprehending multiple suspects involved in a crime in Soweto.

The JMPD Tactical Response Unit (TRU) received information from SAPS Crime Intelligence regarding a planned ATM bombing at an Engen garage in Protea, Soweto, on March 12.

At approximately 02:30 on March 13, gunshots were heard coming from the garage. Upon immediate response, officers observed a group of males fleeing the scene.

The suspects opened fire on the responding officers, who returned fire. The suspects then fled into a nearby bush.

JMPD officers arrested three suspects and recovered two firearms.

A thorough search of the garage revealed a security guard who had sustained a gunshot wound to the right upper arm.

Explosives were also discovered attached to an FNB ATM, which had failed to detonate.

A further exchange of gunfire ensued as the suspects attempted to flee into the bush.During the exchange, one male suspect was fatally wounded, and another was critically injured and was taken to the hospital under police guard. Three additional suspects were apprehended.

The operation resulted in the recovery of four explosives, two firearms, six detonator wires, unmeasured quantities of additional wiring, and a Toyota Quantum used in the commission of a crime.

According to chief of police Patrick Jaca, the TRU’s swift and decisive actions prevented a potentially devastating incident and resulted in the successful apprehension of dangerous criminals.

Wires used to setup explosives were collected at the scene as part of the evidence.

“JMPD commends the bravery and professionalism of our officers, who acted with exceptional skill and dedication in this operation.”
