Soweto comedian makes ikasi proud at comedy awards
Khanyisile Ngwenya is on a new journey, from being bullied for being different to becoming a celebrated comedian.
Khanyisile Ngwenya from Zone 3, Diepkloof, has made a mark in comedy after she recently won The Eb Award (best newcomer) during the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards at The Lyric Theatre in Gold Reef City on April 12.
Ngwenya certified her place in the industry, having been bullied for most of her childhood for being different.
The 39-year-old was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disorder characterised by fragile bones that break easily.
It’s caused by a defect in the genes that produce collagen, a bone protein.

She was able to turn her challenge into an opportunity when she started stand-up comedy in 2020 after moving to Cape Town for a job.
Reflecting on her victory five years later, Ngwenya said her achievement validates that she is on the right path.
“Sometimes I was unsure whether I was on the right path.”
“Getting this award tonight just reminded me I should continue doing the most and I am on the right path,” said Ngwenya.
She further noted that she always loved comedy, but growing up in Soweto, between Diepkloof and Zone 8, Meadowlands, there were no platforms for comedy.
She only started after seeing how big comedy was in Cape Town, with a push from a friend who always told her she was funny.

When asked what she is doing to develop comedy in her township to help those who lack such platforms, Ngwenya said she is currently taking one step at a time to grow in the industry, and eventually she will be able to contribute.
“I am representing a whole lot of people, women, and black women. There are steps that I need to take before I can get to that level.”
“So, one step at a time, but I know doors will open. I think the minute you step into faith, doors open for you and things align for you. I believe if that is my calling, the universe will direct me that way.”

She advised upcoming comedians to embrace what makes them unique.
“When I started my comedy career, I realised my differences could be a strength, not a weakness. Don’t hide who you are; use it as your superpower,” she added.
“Stepping into new spaces can be scary, but that is often where your destiny lies. When your dreams intimidate you, that is exactly when you need to pursue them. Use your uniqueness to take control and make your mark.”
Ngwenya was nominated along with Daniele du Plessis, Keketso Hutamo, Ngosa and Wesley King.

The biggest winner on the night was seasoned comedian Celeste Ntuli, who claimed the Comedian of the Year Award.
