Gauteng Health responds to water outage at hospitals

The GDoH activates contingency measures to ensure private water tankers can be dispatched to the affected facilities as quickly as possible.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) closely monitors the impact of ongoing water supply disruptions in parts of the West Rand and Johannesburg districts.

This follows a pipe burst on Rand Water’s F39 pipeline near Soweto on May 19, which has caused water outages and low pressure in several areas.

At this stage, they do not know how long the problem will persist. Technical teams from the water utilities are working around the clock to do emergency repairs.

Affected in the Johannesburg health district are Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and Discoverers Community Health Centre, mostly in their accident and emergency areas.

Braamfisher Clinic, Princess Clinic and Hillbrow Community Health Centre use internal water backup systems. The GDoH has already activated contingency measures to ensure the dispatch of private water tankers to the affected facilities as quickly as possible.

The GDoH also engages with authorities so that they can prioritise health facilities and assist with the dispatching of water tankers. They will also continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
